Visovac Monastery
In the middle of the emerald-green waters of Visovac Lake, in the heart of Krka National Park, lies the small island of Visovac – one of the most remarkable places in the Šibenik region. The combination of peaceful waters, lush greenery, rocky landscapes and centuries-old spiritual heritage creates a scene to remember.
Visovac is mentioned in historical records as early as the 14th century, when Augustinian hermits lived on the island. After their departure, the Franciscans arrived in 1445, gradually developing the island as a place of prayer, knowledge and education. In 1576, the Church and Monastery of Our Lady of Mercy were built, giving Visovac its distinctive character and establishing it as an important spiritual centre.
Today, the Franciscan monastery preserves a valuable library, archive, museum and collections of historical and sacred artefacts, bearing witness to more than five centuries of Franciscan presence on the island.
A visit to Visovac is more than a trip into nature. It is an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the tranquillity of the island and discover a place where nature, history, culture and spirituality have been intertwined for centuries.
Discover a place. Feel the peace. Take home a memory.
